"In the basement of this building, young men from Shelby County answered their country's call. Their names were recorded, their futures uncertain. The walls still carry that weight."
Shelby County Post Office · 701 Main St
The History
The building at 701 Main Street has always been a place where Shelbyville's story was written. As the original Shelby County Post Office, it was the heartbeat of the community — where letters were sent, news was received, and neighbors crossed paths.
In the basement below, during the years of the draft, young men from across Shelby County came to register — some for World War II, some for Korea. They sat in these rooms, signed their names, and walked back out into a world that would never be the same.
The Mailroom honors that legacy. It is a place to gather, to remember, and to celebrate the people and the spirit of this community — with Kentucky bourbon, candlelight, and the kind of conversation that only happens in rooms with history.
